We’ve all heard of CrossFit. That crazy intense workout-til-you-throw-up thing? Yeah; well it’s actually not as crazy as it seems. Yes CrossFit is filled with the fittest people on Earth. No you don’t have to be the fittest person on Earth to join. As most of you will know, I have lost 55kg and have made no secret of my love for CrossFit.
For those of you who haven’t actually heard about it and are wondering what CrossFit is – it’s strength and conditioning based on functional movements that are completed at a high intensity. The movements are different every day providing a new challenge for both your body and mind to take on each session. It’s certainly not your regular gym.

Step in: The Average Girls Guide to CrossFit!
The first lesson in CrossFit 101 is that at any height, weight, shape or size, it is achievable. I started CrossFit when I was at my heaviest; 5’10 and XXXkg. I couldn’t even do a proper sit up! Now look at me…
Not only that but I have joint problems that they have to work with too! Any good gym should be able to scale movements to work for you and your limits… Never work out through the pain – things should be uncomfortable but not painful.
Finding a gym that suits you is essential. Personally, because I am not super fit nor overly interested in being competitive with anyone but myself when I go to CrossFit, I chose to attend a community based gym where they focus on technique over quantity. It took awhile to get used to being in a class with others and I was put off for a long time with the thought there would be people watching me, but soon enough I was squatting, rowing and weight lifting with the best of ’em!
When first beginning there are Olympic Weight Lifting moves that you have to learn, which was probably my favourite part. Any good CrossFit gym will start you off with a few introductory sessions for beginners which will train you in these movements as well as some of the fundamental movements; squats, ring rows, push ups, bear crawls and more! Fun fact: most people have no clue how to do a proper squat!
If all of that wasn’t enough, you now have to decide what to wear to CrossFit; an important part to any Average Gal’s workout plan! I recommend fitted clothes such as 7/8th workout leggings and a fitted top that aren’t going to get in the way and a good pair of flat training shoes; flatter shoes are better for weight lifting. You’ll also see many CrossFitters wearing knee high socks during their workout, these help with protecting your shins during box jumps, deadlifts and double unders. My last lesson for you before you head to your first CrossFit session is to provide you with a few key words that will help you on your way and well, save you from a whole lot of confusion when you see them for the first time!

Now you’re ready to head along and get squatting! Remember, don’t be scared to try something new. Your CrossFit coach is there to help and should be ready and willing to scale movement to your ability! There’s nothing more satisfying than working on your scaling only to reach the next level. If I can go from not being able to do a sit up to being a sit up machine, then you can too! You’ll be an Average Gal turned CrossFit Queen in no time!
