Living in New Zealand is a blessing. We’ve got some of the best scenery in the world, people are super friendly, and it’s not too overcrowded. But what about when we want to see the rest of the world? It can be a bit of a challenge, after all, we’re kind of in the middle of nowhere (to the point that some countries don’t even know that we exist… seriously). Sure, we have Australia on our doorstep, but so many other countries are so expensive to get to, and such a long flight away, that it becomes difficult to know whether to actually make the effort or not.

Luckily, flights aren’t as bad as they used to be. The quality of food seems to have improved, and there are usually various entertainment systems in place to keep you from dying of boredom. But what can you do to make things even better?
Use Wi-Fi
Yes, finally, a lot of various flights now have in-flight Wi-Fi. That’s great news for people who seriously can’t stop their connected life for just one second! Whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or anything else, you can easily get your fix from 35,000 feet. Of course, for some people, being in the skies is the perfect time to shut off and hey, that’s understandable! Luckily, social media isn’t the only thing you can do when you have a connection. Why not keep up to date with the news? Better still, why not play some games to break the monotony of a long flight? Kiwi Pokies offer loads of themed ones; even one based off the Bridesmaids movies (so perfect if you’re jetting off on a girly holiday)!
Wi-Fi isn’t currently available on all planes out of New Zealand, but a lot of the bigger airlines offer it. The great news is that just a couple of months ago, our national carrier, Air NZ, announced its plans for one of the best sky connections in the world!
Bring Snacks
Ever been told you’re eating out of boredom? Yeah… and what, right? Eating really does help to pass the time, and there are loads of tasty treats you can bring on board (especially if the food on the flight is gross). Whether you like things sweet or you’re a bit of a health nut, you can fit an abundance of goodies into your carry-on – you just need to make sure you’ve finished before you get off, because customs people don’t like you bringing in a tonne of food!
Don’t forget to respect your fellow passengers, too – no spicy food or fish sandwiches, those planes are SMALL and the air has nowhere to go! Don’t be that guy!
Read A Book
Seriously… when did you last read a book for fun? These days it’s kind of sad that screens have overtaken the page, so why not use your flight time to take things back old school? If you’re stuck for inspiration, there are loads of inspiring travel books out there. Eat, Pray, Love is a fantastic book detailing one woman’s physical – and emotional – journey across three countries after her divorce, and we could all stand to benefit from her insight.

As with anything slightly boring, the key is always distraction. What’s the longest flight you’ve ever taken? Any tips to help enjoy the ride?
