Recently I got sent a cute wee Matcha tea kit to review from Happy Matcha Green Tea which is a brand new premium Matcha company here in Australia.
Matcha is super popular in Australia as both a tea and also a baking ingredient. Loads of Health Cafes seem to be sporting Matcha flavoured everything; from raw donuts to bliss balls! I got some of the brewing tea to try but have the cooking matcha in my sights for future. Having grown up enjoying normal traditional green tea when I was younger, I didn’t quite know what to expect.
My first brew was a little too strong due to my apparent lack of instruction following skills but after correcting my errors (note: do not add the equivalent of 2 teaspoons hahaha) I have enjoyed the green tea flavour in a smooth drink. It does taste similar to regular green tea, but the end result is much more pleasing: an almost creamy and very smooth brew. I don’t have any other matcha experiences to compare this to, however I can only guess this is top of the line due to its fine stone ground texture and beautiful packaging. This matcha also comes directly from Japan and is premium organic.
I brewed it by using the scoop I was provided, to add the equivalent of half a teaspoon to my mug, then adding 1/3 cup of boiling water and whisking with my bamboo whisk until frothy.
So, what is matcha you ask? 🍃
Matcha is a green tea with a powerhouse of health benefits. 1 matcha tea has the nutritional benefits equivalent to 10 regular green tea. It helps reduce brain fog, increases mental alertness and clarity. It also helps with immune defence, acts as an anti-inflammatory and is packed with LOADS of anti-oxidants; more than goji, acai and dark chocolate! Matcha has also emerged as an aid to long term weight loss (read more here) because of its effect on the digestive system.
I have been asked about the caffeine in matcha – and it does contain some, but its roughly 64% less than a regular cup of coffee. You can read more about the caffeine in matcha here.
Needless to say I could list off the benefits of match for ages, but I’m looking forward to enjoying this more regularly and reaping the rewards myself!
